12/09/2015 Marla - Coober Pedy (Australia)

After a short day's ride of 140 miles we arrived at Coober Pedy, opals are found here in the ground  since the beginning of the last century, accordingly, the region is littered with opal mines and slag heaps. Even today, here are found around 75% of all opals worldwide.

Coober Pedy is the hottest place on our Australia tour so far , 40 degrees Celsius and the sun beats down mercilessly from the sky, therefore we are happy with our cave hotel, the room is built into the mountain and has a pleasant temperature.

In the afternoon we started a mine tour, the owner's wife turned out to be German emigrant and told us on a private tour interesting and valuable information about opals and Coober Pedy.

The surrounding area of Coober Pedy has also been used in many movies as a location, the best known are probably the Mad Max films and Pitch Black. A Spaceship from Pitch Black and other movie sceneries can still be seen here today:
