Day 56

30/10/2015 Taungoo – Golden Rock (Myanmar)

After 280 km of driving, only interrupted by a fuel stop and persistently supervised by the eager eyes of our permanently photographing Mr. Win from the ministry of tourism, we reached the Golden Rock, an important Buddhistic shrine.

Because it’s not allowed to drive by car up to the pilgrimage site in 1000 meters height, we parked our Deloreans in the guarded Basecamp and used the stand by modified lorries to reach the shrine and our hotel nearby.

From the balcony we have a fantastic view at the surrounding mountain area.

In the golden Stupa, which is built on the rock, there is a golden hair of Buddha being adored. The overhanging rock is only fixed by a few points but survived earthquakes and storms unscathed. That’s why it’s considered to be holy. It’s called the “Golden Rock” because the Buddhist pilgrims are decorating it with gold leaf.

Today is already our last night in Myanmar, tomorrow we’ll drive into Thailand.
