10/24/2015 Guwahati - Imphal (India)
Today's route on day 50 of our world tour was quite long, 300 miles. Therefore we started at 7am in the morning with the DeLoreans and made our way. The hotel manager knew allegedly the stretch; he meant that 9-10 hours would be possible. The first 130 miles went well; we quickly came over on four-lane 'highways'. To run across cars, people and animals in the same lane, became accustomed to us.
Then the road led into the highlands, a scenic great serpentine route, if it were not for the deteriorating pothole roads. Following the motto 'From Bad to Worse' the way was for another 40 km so bad that with difficulty we reached a 16 mile/h-average. We drove through places built in steep hillsides, but it is simply unimaginable in what a terrible condition the roads are there.
We had been prepared for a late arrival at dusk on the day-target, when suddenly we were at a roadblock and we were not allowed to continue. Somehow we knew that already...
The senior police officer told us that due to political measures the journey to Imphal (currently around 65 miles from our position) is not possible until 12pm. At the checkpoint already 40 to 50 more cars and buses waited to continue their journey and for another night rally we were definitely not in the mood.
We explained our situation about the world tour, a tight schedule, an urgent appointment on the border with Myanmar and so on. The official then telephoned with his supervisor, he sent pictures of our India visas to the officer in charge of the blocking. An hour later the impossible became true and we were permitted to proceed. To be sure that we really get through and there are no held back on further police posts, a police escort accompanied us.
For the 65 miles atrocious road with the police jeep in front of us we needed nearly 3.5 hours and arrived at 9:15pm at our destination Imphal, albeit by a total of 14 hours rate 'On the Road'.
